Tomar is in the district of Santarem in Central Portugal. It is the capital of the Medio Tejo (Mid-Tagus river) region. It has a total area of 351.2 square kilometres. It attracts many tourists due to its varied monuments the main one being the Castle and Convent of the Order of Christ which stands high on a hill overlooking the town.
The municipality is composed of 16 parishes (administrative districts):
